Holton French Horn Serial Number: How to Find and Date Your Instrument

Single valve Shires bass trombone with a custom Hagmann valve added and built by Chuck McAlexander at The Brass Lab. The valve is a Rene Hagmann valve from Switzerland. This bass is in excellent condition and is quite an excellent playing instrument. The valve register is open and quick responding and the trombone has a wonderful singing quality to the tone. It has a BII 2RT7 bell flare that matches to the valve well. The slide is a B6278YC, dual bore with yellow brass end crook. $2150 with new Protec case. SOLD Bach 50K2 Bass TromboneAn amazing playing bass trombone, this is a Bach 50 with inline K valves. The bell on this horn might be one of the best Bach bells I've ever played. The valves are large and can poke you if you have a wide neck. $2750 with case. ON HOLD King Herald Trumpet in BbKing Herald Trumpet, circa 1970s. In good condition with original case. REDUCED $525 Bach/Osmun C TrumpetModel 239H bell, 7R leadpipe, valve alignment by Osmun. Excellent condition with nice silver finish. $1500 with case. Originally owned by Milt Bernhart who played with Kenton and Sinatra and played the famous solo in "I've got you under my skin". Its in very nice condition, 3 digit serial number. Includes a custom made Walt Johnson case. I am also selling a Williams 6 slide on its own, which was from this same collection. That slide may or may not belong originally to this trombone. The one included with it is the one that was played by the current owner who hails from the Las Vegas professional scene. For the full package, I'd recommend picking up the extra slide too. This instrument with case is $3000

The Yamaha 667v was one of the most popular "Geyer" style french horns made. It has since been replaced by the newer YFR-871 model but most players still seek out the model 667v, as they general consensus is that it is a better instrument. They "Geyer" sound, an inline valve block coupled with a medium throat yellow brass horn and open wrap has become the industry standard for French Horns. Many of these instruments are well over $10k now, this Yamaha is a top tier professional level geyer style horn in the same league but half the price of some of the boutique makers. It is in very excellent used condition, raw brass, no dents or major cosmetic blems. Ready to play out of the box. Includes the original case. SOLD $4800

Long the industry standard for the west coast and many professional orchestras around the world. This is a newer Eastlake Conn 8D, good lightly used condition with some minor cosmetic blems and normal wear from use. A good playing instrument that will serve as a workhorse for many years to come. The 8D was based on the famous Kruspe Horner model. It is a large bore french horn with a large bell flare. $2400 without case.

The original King Silvertone trombone, built in the late 1920s by the HN White company. This horn is absolutely a gorgeous time capsule. It is all original with matching serial numbers. It is in fantastic condition for nearing 100 years old. The slide has the original tubes in great shape and the slide action is extremely respectable for a trombone of this vintage. The hand engraving is jaw dropping gorgeous. Lion head engraving on the slide is also clear and not worn. She's a beauty. $1600 with case.

A very nice "L series" Conn 8D professional french horn, raw nickel silver. Cut (screw) bell. In very good condition. There is a small patch in the flare (shown in photo). The valves have been plated and are sealing well. Includes a leather Marcus Bonna case. $3300 SOLD

Here is a nice vintage Conn Elkhart pre-letter (600,000 serial) model 8D French Horn. It has had the bell cut, includes a custom Patterson leadpipe with Saturn water key installed and has had a valve job so it will last for many years of playing. Curious, it looks like the original engraving was buffed out and someone tried to re-engrave it and did a mediocre job. Regardless, you can tell that the bell tail is original from the material and the location of the brazing seam. The horn has been cleaned and is ready to play. Comes with a protec case. $3600 SOLD

Here's a lightly used professional double horn made by Mark Atkinson in Burbank, CA. Mark has been making some of the most popular french horns recently, especially his Geyer AG-2000, which was being used by Andrew Bain of the LA Philharmonic. This model is the A-800, which is modeled after the Conn 8D. Like the Conn, it is nickel silver, has a 12.5" bell flare and a large bore. This particular instrument has a cut bell for ease of traveling which is a nice upgrade. Overall in very good condition with no dents. Its been recently cleaned and has a mouthpiece and case included (the case has a broken zipper on the outer pocket). A nice touch, the valve caps are gold plated. Price is $2550 with case. SOLD (This is a great deal!)

Here's a nearly new condition Conn 8D double french horn. Made in Eastlake Ohio, it is about 3 years old and has maybe 5-8 hours of playing time on it. For all intents and purposes it is a new instrument. Lacquer is 100% $2700 with case. I can have the bell cut for you for an additional $450

This really nice Conn 88H came in as a total wreck and was restored by Don Sawday in Long Beach. I had Don replace the inner slide tubes with new ones, remove dents from the trombone, new tuning slide bow, remove the leadpipe to press fit, and gently buff and relacquer the whole instrument. It really came out nice! This 88H is from the late 1950s and is an 800,000 serial number. It has a thin responsive bell with a clear and brilliant sound. The only real blem on the horn is a slight flat spot in one area on the rim wire (shown in the photo). Price is $1800 without case.

This is an unusual orchestral tenor trombone, and it has a unique sound and playing quality to it. It started off as a straight 8H from around 1957 (700,000 serial with half moon engraving) and somewhere along the way, a thayer valve was added to it as well as a removable straight neck pipe (which I assume to be the original). The horn was lightly buffed and silver plated. The engraving is still fairly sharp. This has that classic thin responsive bell that the 1950s Conn trombones have. The thayer valve keeps the instrument from becoming too bright, probably due to the extra mass it adds. Slotting is easy and the trombone has a quick response. It has removable lead pipes. The slide is narrow, so trombonists with larger necks may have trouble with the thayer poking them in the side. Inner slide tubes are worn on the ends of the stockings, but the slide action is very good without any catches or scratchiness. They may look bad, but I don't think the inner tubes need to be replaced. Comes with a wolfpak case. $1700 SALE PENDING

This beautiful Conn 8D was built in 1958 and is a 700,000 series serial number. It has had some custom work done to it to improve it's playing characteristics and make the horn more even. The lead pipe was replaced with a Jim Patterson custom and the bell has been cut to make travel easier. It has recently been cleaned and tuned up and is ready for it's new home. Comes with a black leather Marcus Bonna case. $3600 with case.

This is a nice late 1970s vintage Bach model LT12. It has been 24K gold plated and is a stunning trombone to both see and play. I'm a big fan of gold plated horns, I feel that it helps protect the brass but also gives the tone of the horn a nice color and character. This trombone has been well used by a local professional here in Los Angeles, and you will notice some wear on the contact points. It's a great playing instrument and perfect for someone looking for a great lead trombone. It's one of the sweetest sounding Bach 12s I've played. $1900 with Bach french style case. sold

Here's a nice used Bach model 42 with Greenhoe valve. The slide is an early model, serial 40,xxx, the bell is yellow brass and looks to be from the 80s vintage. The valve is in very good condition with little wear. The action is working as it should and plays very even and open on both sides of the horn. The bell has had a few ripples removed. The slide has been cleaned and tuned up but has some lacquer wear. Overall a great playing orchestral instrument. $2500 without case. Sale Pending

Original condition Bach model 42 Mt Vernon. Circa early 1960s and made in Mt Vernon, New York. 6xxx serial number. Lightweight nickel slide, yellow brass bell with french bead rim. In excellent condition, no repairs. A few small dings in the bell which can be rolled out of left, up to the buyer. Original case. Price TBD

I love when a rare and special instrument comes into my shop. This is one of those instruments. It was picked out at the Conn factory in 1950 by a professional hornist. He's used the horn until recently and the miles show on it. The bell has had a lot of rippling and the bell wire split in one spot. Despite that, this horn sounds freaking amazing! The valves have been replated by Bob Atkinson and are sealing well. The lead pipe is also an original Bob Atkinson pipe. 300,000 series Conn 8Ds are regarded as the holy grail of Conn french horns. This one deserves to be in that category, even with it's well worn condition. Price is $2300 with original hard case. REDUCED

Here's a rare bird! The elusive Bach model 9 trombone. The legendary dual bore .485"/.500" slide. This one is from the Mt Vernon period, often regarded as the best period for Bach brasswinds. It has a 6vii bell section in very good shape, with french bead rim wire. The slide is a model 9 and has very good action. This horn plays like a million bucks. It's one of my all time favorite small bores because it has a beautiful singing clear high register but a super beefy and punchy low end with the dual bore. Condition is very good and slide action is smooth and fast. $1800 with old Conn style case 2ff7e9595c
